Reading this passage in Revelation 22 gave me a bit of a wake-up call. In verses 1-5, the writer, John, describes a vision the Lord gave him. The specific verses that stood out to me were verses 4 and 5: ‘They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever.’

In Job 34:2-4, Job’s friend Elihu introduces the idea of testing and choosing right, something we should do throughout our lives. God’s Spirit in us is the ‘spirit level’ that checks all things for goodness. We can set our lives by His truth. Verse 3 tells us, ‘the ear tests words as the palate tastes food’. Check for goodness!

Here in Revelation 18 we read of the destruction of sinful humanity and its rebellion (symbolically called Babylon in the New Testament). This wonky, ungodly and depraved way of living will be utterly destroyed (v. 21). Shockingly and sadly, even as this destruction takes place there will be people who will mourn the loss of it (vv. 10-11,19).

Poor old Job. I feel so sorry for him, don’t you? He hasn’t got a clue why he’s going through such tough times. He doesn’t know that Satan is behind it and God is allowing it all. His friends aren’t much help, either. They don’t offer a God-insight into the problem; and that’s often what we need when we’re going through difficult times. However, God doesn’t always tell us why what’s happening is happening, so we must go on trust.

As a church leader, I’m asked many times about hearing the voice of God, getting an answer to prayer, knowing the will of God. It seems we want to hear from God very much and, like today’s society, we want an answer now, today, this very minute! God sometimes answers our prayers instantly or speaks directly into our lives in a moment, but often we must wait to hear Him.

It’s easy to read Malachi 3:6-15 and come to the conclusion that the reason for God’s anger towards the lack of tithe – the 10 per cent given to God – was because the people were neglecting the God of their finances! But I wonder: perhaps we’ve got this the wrong way round.
