Start by reading...
Psalm 47 is such a happy psalm! In it, we are exhorted to recall what God has done for us, and to remember who He is.
Sometimes, though, we don’t feel like praising. We forget the things that God has done. We concentrate on the present moment – which might not be that great. By doing so, we can find ourselves sinking down, and before we know it, we can be surrounded by gloom, or suffocating under the weight of our circumstances.
At times like these, it can be hard to believe the sun is shining behind the clouds – but it is. Just because we can’t see the blue sky doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
When I was going through a very tough period in my life, I found it hard to open my mouth in praise, even though I had seen God do amazing things before. It can be hard to crank yourself up out of the ‘pit’ at times, but it’s always worth doing. Apart from anything else, God is always worthy of praise, for he ‘is the King of all the earth’ (v. 7). He is who He is, whatever our current situation!
Remembering that and worshipping Him – clapping, shouting, musical instruments are mentioned in this psalm – can lift our spirits as we focus on the One who is bigger than all the problems. Maybe the way you worship is quieter – that’s OK too. Perhaps you worship by painting pictures, writing verse; I think it’s the attitude of heart that God is looking for.
But whether you want to clap, shout, play the trumpet, or quietly praise God, try to bring worship into your everyday life. And see the atmosphere change!
Pause and reflect: Father God, I worship You. You are the Lord of all the earth. You are the eternal God. You are good, and loving, and full of grace and compassion. Thank You for all that you have done for me and all that You have planned. Praise Your name. Amen.
