A Daily Rhythm

Clyde Thomas

Jan 1st 2021 · Day 1

Start by reading...

‘And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you"'

Mark 1:35-37

Welcome to our journey together. The pastor who discipled me in my early years as a Christian taught me that the book we are about to read through this year – the Bible – would keep me from sin, but that sin would keep me from the Bible. That thought has never left me. The times in my life where I walk in vibrancy with my Saviour are the times when I prioritise relationship with Him. I have learned a simple but profound lesson which I hope you will catch today: There will always be something or someone vying for my attention. There will always be things to do instead of spending time with God. Even Jesus had that issue.

Spending time praying and reading the Word of God needs to be the first thing that we put in our calendars, not the last. When everyone is looking for us and the world wants our attention, we need to be found in the secret place of the Most High. Jesus was often disappearing to be with His Father, and if Jesus needed that time, how much more do we? Jesus begins in the prayer closet and He spills out into the public place in power as a result.

So today we begin a daily pursuit. This is not a religious exercise or a spiritual score-card. Like Jesus, we get to enjoy a love relationship with the Father that leaves us longing for more time, not less, and causes us to spill into our world with profound effect. We can only find that when we are away from all the noise and pressures of life.

Pause and reflect: Let us decide today to prioritise our time with God and His Word above all things.
