Being Contrite

I don’t know about you, but I can be trotting along in my daily life, feeling comfortable, and then find that actually, I have moved quite a long way away from the Lord.

So, when obstacles come along, life’s problems and trials, I don’t always respond quite as Jesus might be asking. I panic, I fret, I make wrong choices. Then I come back to God and say, ‘I’m so sorry. I messed up again.’

We need to live close to God to maintain a walk that is honouring to Him. Without that close walk, we are liable to trip up and fall flat on our faces.

Isaiah 57:15 says: ‘For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.’

When we mess up, which we all do at times, it’s comforting to know that as we come to God in humility He will forgive and restore us. And as we go on in our walk with Him, it’s good to maintain that contrite attitude. Although God is mighty, awesome and holy, He lives with the one who has a ‘lowly spirit’ and promises to ‘revive’ their heart.

When we have tricky situations to face, being close to God means we can navigate those difficult waters far more successfully. Thank God that He is willing to live with us, and promises revival for the spirit and heart. God dwells with those who know they are weak and fallible. That’s me. What about you?

Pause and reflect: Do you need to ask God to revive you in spirit and in heart? Come to Him in humility, knowing He loves you and is willing to live with you and in you.
