Sep 17th 2021 · Day 260
Start by reading...
‘Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you’ (Isaiah 60:1).
I can still hear the voice of my mother, ‘Rise and shine!’ – the morning call to get me out of bed. I wonder how many realise it is actually in the Bible!
Arise! We need to get up and stand up to the challenge of the day. Shine! We need to light up the darkness we will meet in our daily lives. This is only possible when we realise the glory of the Lord has risen upon us individually.
In Scripture the Hebrew word for shine is often used to describe light. When we read the wise men were drawn to Jesus by the light of the star of Bethlehem (see Matthew 2) it shows us the power of that light.
We are increasingly seeing the darkness is getting darker. We need therefore to allow Jesus to shine his light and life through us all the more: ‘You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven’ (Matthew 5:14-16).
We must guard against becoming so busy with life’s activities that we are in danger of allowing the light of our spiritual life to be extinguished.
Pause and reflect: How can you rise and shine for Jesus today?
