Filling The Void

I always felt something was missing. I never felt like I belonged or fitted in. Sure, I could put on my masks and be the life and soul of the party, but it didn’t matter how much validation I received from people, I always felt as if I was different. I would feel alone. Maybe you, too, know what it feels like to be always on the outside looking in.

It was like my soul longed for more, like something was missing.

I tried all sorts of things to fill the void; money, girls, drugs, cars, even fighting was a way of trying to feel something, but all these things just left me feeling hollow.

Some fill this void with food, attention; for many, an addiction becomes a way of momentarily quietening that internal groaning that we have all experienced at one time or another.

When we come to Christ, He fills this void. But we can still feel that groaning. Why?

In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul speaks about this very feeling. He says that it’s normal for us to feel as if we don’t belong here. We are heavenly beings, temporarily dwelling on earth, groaning to be with Christ – after all, when we know Him, we become citizens of heaven! That is our true home. And we are called to invite others to know Jesus too – as ‘ambassadors for Christ’ (v. 20).

While in this world, we need to live ‘by faith, not by sight’ (v. 7). God loves us and He will keep us. He will guide us and guard us. Our part is to trust in Him.

Pause and reflect: Ask God for His love to fill you today. Ask Him to help you remove any false void-fillers. Thank Him that He fills the emptiness, and makes us citizens of heaven. How is He calling you to be His ambassador today?
