Reading Habakkuk 1 takes me back to a time in my life I will never forgot. A time that felt like utter despair, darkness – and the worst part, so far away from God. In the midst of the coronavirus lockdown, I found myself in a deep pit of spiritual warfare; the enemy had caused me to think that God had left me and was no longer there in my time of need.
In Habakkuk 1:2 says, ‘O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save?’ These words sound very similar to the words I was crying out to Jesus, when it seemed like He was so far away from me.
Being brought up in the church and in a strong Christian home, I had heard over and over again how God promises to always be with us and never leave us. Yet, in the very moment I needed Him most, it felt as if He wasn’t there. The Jesus I knew who had saved me from anxiety, depression, the bondage of this world was nowhere to be seen.
But in Habakkuk 1:5 it says, ‘“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded.
For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.”’ And in that moment of complete despair, Jesus came through! He picked me up, He showed me how He had been there all along, protecting me, and revealed to me what He had been preparing me for this whole time.
Pause and reflect: Are you feeling far from God? Jesus is for you, He’s with you and will come through for you. He has not abandoned you. He is right there with you, preparing you for the next step in your journey with Him.
