Start by reading...
‘Lord, you’re asking me to do what? I can’t do that! I’m too young / too old / not clever enough / not godly enough! I’ve only been a Christian for five minutes! Can’t You ask someone much more mature in the faith to do this…?’
Have you ever felt like that? It’s comforting to know that our Bible ‘heroes’ have felt the same way, and fumbled over the same excuses, when God has called them!
We tend to think of Old Testament prophets as really aged and wise. But Jeremiah was clearly a young man when the Lord called him. He tells God that he hasn’t got a clue how speak for the Lord – he’s too young (Jeremiah 1:6)! This is in response to God’s gracious words in verse 5: ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you …’
God knew us even before He formed us in our mother’s womb. Let that sink in.
He knew you before you were born and already had a plan for you. Uniquely, individually. You are not an accident. You are not a mistake. You are a person who God has always known, and has a plan for.
He knows why He has made us. He knows what He has called us to do… but His ideas for our lives may actually come as a shock to us. However, if God is calling us, even if we feel we are not up to the task, totally experienced or out of our depth, we can be assured He will equip us. He is with us and we needn’t be afraid (v. 8).
Pause and reflect: How does it impact you that God made you uniquely, and knew you before you were born? What is He calling you to do? Talk to Him about it!
