It is certainly the case in my life that I feel equipped and strengthened, not because I have walked without challenges but rather because, many times I have lived through difficulties and witnessed God’s power. Even today, my posture is with my gaze towards heaven, my hands lifted up, declaring God’s word over a difficult situation.
I’m introducing 1 Peter 1:3-5 as one of my very favourite passages: ‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.’
Here, Peter is addressing the Church, dispersed throughout Asia and beyond. In the face of their great persecution, he honours them for their new birth, their love for Jesus, knowledge of God’s mercy, their hope of everlasting life. These were bold men and women.
Peter’s words are encouraging: he tells them that the reality of their faith may be seen to result in honour, glory and praise to God, as Jesus Christ is revealed through their time of testing and trials (vv. 6-7).
We too are just passing through, set apart in this world. We may be facing accusation and persecution for His name. Adversity will surely come against us, but even in the midst of the trial we can declare Him blessed and proclaim His mercies. His love and promises never let us down!
Pause and reflect: Thank God for your new life and the power of the cross! Remember – there is an inheritance that is ‘kept in heaven for you’. Yes, you!
