House of Worship

Psalm 84:10 in The Message version of the Bible says: ‘One day spent in your house, this beautiful place of worship, beats thousands spent on Greek island beaches.’

How do you feel about attending church? Do you love it? Do you look forward to going? Do you get a thrill out of attending? Is it the highlight of your week? Do you miss it when you can’t get to the house of worship?

When church is the way it is supposed to be, it is a place people are excited to attend. It is a place where we can meet with other Christians; where we can hear God speak to them and to us through His glorious and divine Word. Church – whether in a purpose-built building, a hall, a school or someone’s home – is a place where God is exalted, and where people are encouraged and edified.

The psalmist speaks so eloquently of what worship means to him in the context of going to God’s ‘house’. Verse 10 in the ESV says: ‘For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.’

There’s a wider interpretation here. Being close to God means more to the psalmist than being anywhere else. He’s rather be a lowly servant and be near to God than be living elsewhere and perhaps in more elevated circumstances!

But of course, there is something special about meeting with God’s people and worshipping Him together, experiencing His presence. Wherever we meet with other believers – in a church building or elsewhere – let’s do this with excitement, and a sense of expectation!

Pause and reflect: Where do you meet with other believers? Do you look forward to it? Enjoy it? Or not? If you are struggling either to find a good fellowship to belong to, or even in the one you regularly attend, is there anyone you can talk to about it?
