A Great Picture

Start by reading...

That a picture can paint 1,000 words is an expression that we are probably all familiar with. It refers to the notion that one single image can convey a meaning more clearly than much text or spoken word.

In John 13:4-5 we read: ‘[Jesus] rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it round his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped round him.’

So when Jesus took a towel and washed the feet of His disciples, He left them a picture of humility and service. It was something that would remain visible, like a painted canvas to them; He was illustrating that this was what it looked like to properly live out a high calling!

Servanthood is not something we know but that which we internalise and which becomes a disposition of the heart. It’s something we choose to live out. Our qualification as ambassadors for Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:20) is not ministry title, agenda or knowledge, position or rank but the mark of Christ… lowly, humble, self-denying, displaying love.

We have an incredible standing as ‘children of God (1 John 3:1). We are His representatives, we carry a mandate to ‘go share the gospel’ (Matthew 28:16-20). I believe that before others hear what we have to say, they decide whether our lives are authentic, an illustration of Jesus.

Christ’s message was go low in your service. ‘…love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another’ (John 13:34-35).

Pause and reflect: Will you ask God to make your love increase and overflow for others? Be ready for the testimonies that come from it!
