The Only Way

Sheila Jacobs

Nov 11th 2021 · Day 315

Start by reading...

There is so much packed into John 14! The promise that Jesus will take us to be with Him in a place He has prepared (vv. 1-3); the promise of the Holy Spirit (vv. 16,26) – Jesus comforting His disciples, and us; He may not be physically in the world, but He has not left us as orphans (v. 18). The promise of His peace is here – the peace that doesn’t depend on worldly circumstances (v. 27).

Jesus tells us not to ‘let’ our ‘hearts be troubled’ or ‘afraid’ (v. 27 – see also v. 1). Does that mean, then, that we can ‘let’ ourselves be overwhelmed by the circumstances of life? That we have a choice not to ‘let’ our hearts be disturbed? It would seem so.

The conversation Jesus has with Thomas is so important to our life and faith. Jesus says is ‘the way’ to God; He is ‘the truth’; He Himself is ‘the life’. And look what comes next: ‘No one comes to the Father except through me’ (v. 6).

That is quite a controversial statement. Is Jesus really saying that He is the only way to God? That there is no other way, outside of Him?

That all our good works, that our alternative belief systems, won’t get us into relationship, won’t get us right, with the Creator?

Jesus is the only way. He is the One who paid the price for our sin – all that separates us from our holy God. Jesus, the way, the truth, the life – yes, in Himself, life – God in the flesh, has come, has walked among us, and has made it possible for anyone who comes to Him to know Him. The One who comforts, brings peace, and never leaves us – He is God.

Pause and reflect: What part of John 14 stands out especially for you?
