Staying in the Vine

Sheila Jacobs

Nov 12th 2021 · Day 316

Start by reading...

What an amazing picture we have in John 15 of the importance of staying close to Jesus! Jesus often picked everyday images to illustrate spiritual points. Here, He talks about a vine.

We read in verse 4: ‘Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.’ We need to stay close to Him, if we want to produce the good fruit of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23). We need to walk closely with Him, listening to His every word, whispered to our hearts. It isn’t our own fruit we are producing. It is His fruit, in us. So we need to be open and responsive to His voice.

That can be hard, when ‘stuff’ happens. Stressful situations can cause us to stray away from Jesus. It isn’t long before we don’t want to read our Bibles, can’t quite work up the energy to go to church, and prayer becomes dry.

These are indicators that we’ve wandered off. That we aren’t ‘abiding’. Jesus says in verse 5: ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.’

It’s worth spending time thinking about what Jesus actually meant here. I think He meant that when we don’t ‘abide’, rest in Him, we start to do life in our own strength, rather than in His. Better to rest and let the King do the kingdom work through us!

Pause and reflect: What ordinary image can you think of today that illustrates a spiritual principle in your own life?
