The Helper

Sheila Jacobs

Nov 15th 2021 · Day 319

Start by reading...

‘I’m going away,’ Jesus tells His disciples before He was crucified. ‘But I’ll send the Helper to you!’ How confused the disciples must have been! Who was this ‘Helper’ (John 16:7) who was going to ‘convict the world’ about sin, righteousness and judgement (v. 8)?

We know that this was a reference to the Holy Spirit, who came once Jesus had ascended to His Father. We cannot begin to explain the Trinity: the God that is three in One – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – but we know that there are three who are One, separate and yet of the same essence. The Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity who resides on earth, with us and in us.

How fascinating that He is the One who convicts people of sin, of righteousness and judgement. I have often talked to people about Jesus, hoping they might believe in Him. But I wonder if the best way to introduce someone to Jesus is just that: invite them to know Him, experience Him, to read about Him, especially what He said about Himself in the Gospel of John, and to trust the Holy Spirit to ‘do His work’ in them. (Having said this, God uses different ways and different methods to reach people. We can’t put God in a box!)

Still, so often we try to fill in the gaps, as if we need to do God’s work for Him. I find myself actually getting in God’s way in my eagerness to share what I know of Him. I have to remind myself that I am in partnership with the Spirit; I need to listen to Him, as He knows what He is doing in the person in front of me – He knows their heart!

Pause and reflect: Lord, thank You for the Helper. Please fill me with Your Spirit today. Amen.
