First Love

Lydia Reed

Nov 22nd 2021 · Day 326

Start by reading...

Many of us have got that ‘first love’ experience of meeting Jesus for the very first time – although of course, some people can’t remember when they began to love Him: it’s been a journey!

For me, my first love experience with Jesus was six years ago. I was thirteen and was struggling with who I was and my whole point of being here. I went into my room one night and decided to try this God thing my parents had been going on about all my life. I put on worship music, closed my eyes, and prayed. The overwhelming feeling of love that washed over me as it felt like Jesus had just walked into my bedroom was surreal. I fell madly in love with this man called Jesus.

The passage in John 21 consists of Jesus appearing to the disciples the third time after He had been resurrected. In verses 15-19, we read Jesus asking Simon Peter if he loves him three times. It’s almost like Jesus was giving Simon a second chance to redeem himself after he had just denied Jesus three times. Jesus then asks Simon to ‘follow me’. This takes me back to when Jesus invited the fisherman to follow him (Matthew 4:18-22).

In John 21, it seems that Jesus was reminding Peter of the love he had for Jesus. Above everything else, we must always come back to our first love with the King and remind ourselves that our love, desire and passion for Jesus is all that matters.

Pause and reflect: Think back to a time when God’s love was very real for you. Have you ever ‘fallen in love’ with Jesus?
