These days, with the ever-growing dominance of social media, the ability to share our words, thoughts and opinions with literally the whole world has become very easy. But words are empty if they aren’t able to be backed up by a demonstration of their meaning.
Several years ago, my family and I were trying to move house. But houses are expensive and although we had scrimped and saved as much as we could to buy the house we wanted, we still fell short by about £30,000.
Then an amazing thing happened.
Some of our Christian friends and family began to make payments into our account and eventually we had everything that we needed to buy our home. It was incredible! But reflecting back on that time, what made the most impact on us as a family was exactly where the money came from. It came from people who would have found it a great cost to give. In order to say ‘yes’ to us, they were saying ‘no’ to having various things themselves. It was a very beautiful, humbling experience to be on the receiving end of such sacrificial love. We now enjoy sharing this story with our non-believing friends because we have seen how much it impacts them to witness what Christian love looks like in action.
‘But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth’ (1 John 3:17-18).
Pause and reflect: Spend some time with the Holy Spirit and ask Him to reveal to you any areas in your life where you need to take action, rather than just talking!
