The Unexpected Blessing

Start by reading...

As we read through today’s passages, we come across a little nugget of gold that we could miss if we weren’t looking carefully: ‘… yet our God turned the curse into a blessing’ (Nehemiah 13:2).

Your life at the moment may be peaceful. Maybe you have a few issues, but there’s nothing major. Or perhaps everything is a drama, turbulent and terrifying – although hopefully not to the level we read about in Revelation 8! Perhaps there are people who you feel make life difficult for you. Maybe you are being persecuted in some way.

We may not always see the circumstances of our lives as good, or as something from which good could come. We may feel as if the ‘curse’ in our lives could never become a blessing. But the Lord can turn things around, and bring surprising blessing out of difficult times.

When I was very ill with Meniere’s disease, and unable to work, I started to write. Several of my children’s books were published, and as they were Christian stories, I hope they blessed many. I wonder if I would have had the time to write if I hadn’t been ‘laid aside’ from my normal life due to illness. In truth, I would probably have chosen another path. Most importantly, God also used that time to lay a foundation stone in my life – one of closeness with Him. So I can see that He brought good out of what seemed to be a total disaster back then.

So if you’re going through tough times, take heart. Look for the unexpected blessing!

Pause and reflect: Ask God to show you an unexpected blessing today.
