As a church leader, I’m asked many times about hearing the voice of God, getting an answer to prayer, knowing the will of God. It seems we want to hear from God very much and, like today’s society, we want an answer now, today, this very minute! God sometimes answers our prayers instantly or speaks directly into our lives in a moment, but often we must wait to hear Him.
God spoke to me recently about how I invest my finances. This is personal to me and God may speak to you differently. Hearing what God said to me took me on a path of discovery, and changed the way I now think and act about financial investment. One word from the Lord has changed me. That’s powerful! Years of understanding things one way was wiped out in a matter of days because God spoke to me and challenged my thinking.
In Psalm 29 today we read that ‘the voice of the Lord is over the waters … the voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars … The voice of the Lordflashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness … The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth’ (vv. 3-9).
The voice of God is everywhere. It is powerful, it is beautiful, it breaks, it shakes, and it gives life. We just need to be listening. Take some time today to read Psalm 29 a few times over, and ask God to speak to you. God wants a relationship with us which allows Him to speak into our lives regularly, not just when we are waiting for an answer to prayer.
Pause and reflect: To hear the voice of God we must spend time in His presence, spend time in His Word, spend time in prayer and in worship. Let’s be intentional about hearing the voice of God.
