Out of This World!

Start by reading...

Here in Revelation 18 we read of the destruction of sinful humanity and its rebellion (symbolically called Babylon in the New Testament). This wonky, ungodly and depraved way of living will be utterly destroyed (v. 21). Shockingly and sadly, even as this destruction takes place there will be people who will mourn the loss of it (vv. 10-11,19).

Why? How could people mourn such a system? The passage that perhaps offers some explanation is verse 14: the mourners are told that the ‘fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you’. They longed at the core of their being for the wrong fruit.

I wonder what our souls are longing for today? Are we focused enough on the Word, the Bible, so that our souls are longing for the fruit of the Spirit and the kingdom of God? There are really only two ways to live. There

is no fence. We are called out of this culture as the people of God, called to live by a different set of values. This is a key thread we see throughout Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation.

We read in Revelation 18:4 of a voice that calls God’s people to come out from the world. We are to keep out and stay out. This doesn’t mean we have to leave this world, or not mix with the people around us – after all, if we were to do that, how could they hear about the amazing love of God, and what Jesus did for us on the cross? But we should not ‘take part in [the] sins’ of the world. We need to live differently – for Jesus, and the gospel.

Pause and reflect: How do you need to live differently in the world, today?
