Jan 13th 2021 · Day 13
Start by reading...
In Genesis 22 we read of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. As a father, if God asked me, could I do this? Yet Abraham full of faith set off with his son to the place he would sacrifice him: ‘Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together’ (v. 8).
We can see a prophetic picture here of God’s provision of Jesus Christ, who would come and allow himself to be led as a lamb to the slaughter to be sacrificed once and for all so we might receive salvation, a hope of eternal life.
Was God looking for a sacrifice from Abraham, or was He looking for obedience? God was testing Abraham, looking for someone who he could trust to be the father of the nation of Israel. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane he said, ‘not my will, but yours, be done’ (Luke 22:42). He was obedient to His Father before going to the cross.
God is asking us today, will we be obedient to His Word and the calling upon our lives? Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son because God asked him to. What has God been asking you to do that you have been putting off? It’s great to say I give to this ministry and that ministry, but God is asking us, as we climb out of bed each day, to take up our cross and follow him (see Matthew 16:24), listen to him, be obedient to him.
Pause and reflect: Meditate on Deuteronomy 13:4: ‘You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.’
