Inheritance

Start by reading...

God has chosen us! He has adopted us! Do you know God as Father? When we truly know Him as Father, everything begins to change in our lives.

All of us find ourselves in slavery. Our slavery is bondage to sin; it skews our view of God and stops us from receiving His grace and compassion. Thankfully, there is an answer. Through Jesus Christ, we can come out of slavery and into freedom.

Just as God sent Moses to the people of Israel, He sent Jesus to you, me and the whole world. Eventually, after their escape from Egypt, Moses brought the children of Israel to Mount Sinai, a place of covenant worship with Almighty God. Their journey was an example to us; God’s presence was with them throughout. Jesus brings us into a land of rest and freedom.

In Jesus, there is a new covenant (agreement). Through His death and resurrection, God gives us His love, grace, forgiveness, mercy and grace – we are adopted into His family as sons and daughters! Ephesians 1 tells us we have a wonderful inheritance. We need to have the eyes of our hearts ‘enlightened’ (v. 18) so we can understand the fullness of the riches of the inheritance He calls us to.

When we know this hope, when we realise how much we are loved, it gives us great confidence and a strong, compelling desire to please God in all that we say and do. Unlike slaves, we have the freedom to follow Him; not because we have to, but because we love Him.

Pause and reflect: Ephesians 1 tells us that God has ‘lavished’ the ‘riches of his grace’ upon us (vv. 7-8). Grace means God’s free, unearned favour. How does it make you feel to know God lavishes His grace on you?
