Feb 4th 2021 · Day 35
Start by reading...
Today’s readings take us to a special place; to a place that is far above all other places, a place where we stand and marvel at the person and work of Jesus – the Lamb of God. In our reading we are told that the Hebrews were to prepare to leave the slavery and bondage of Egypt, and that they were to take and kill a lamb and to take the blood and put it on the doorposts and lintels. God instructs them: ‘The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt’ (Exodus 12:13).
The lamb in Exodus 12 is a figure of Jesus who, many, many years later, would die, and His blood too would flow over wooden beams; the beams of a wooden cross. In the same way that the Hebrews without the blood would have died, we too without the blood are dead: ‘even when we were dead in our trespasses, [God] made us alive together with Christ…” (Ephesians 2:5).
How did God make us alive? Paul continues to explain: ‘But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ’ (v. 13). When we come to Jesus, receiving His forgiveness, His blood washes away our sin; He has taken away everything that would separate us from our God and Father. We were spiritually dead, and now we are alive. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us: ‘For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works’ – it’s a gift! Praise God!
Pause and reflect: It is no wonder that in heaven the song of all creation is: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever!’ (Revelation 5:13). What song will we sing today?
