Stand, Stand and Stand Again

Richard Reed

Feb 10th 2021 · Day 41

Start by reading...

I spent most of early life in the Boys’ Brigade. A big part of the Boys’ Brigade was drill (organised marching). Most of the boys hated it, as you had to do what you were told, or it didn’t work. To do drill you have to be disciplined; we had to listen to instructions and carefully carry them out, or the whole thing fell apart. It often did fall apart, and we were stopped and corrected! Then we stood up and started again. This went on and on, week after week, until we could do it perfectly.

Today in Ephesians 6 we read of the armour of God. We are asked three times to ‘stand’, as if God is making a really important point. Verse 13 tells us: ‘Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.’

We are in a battle – a spiritual battle. If we give up, we will be trampled on as in any battle, but God is asking us to stand up and keep going, keep reading the Bible and lifting the name of Jesus high. In Boys’ Brigade, when it went wrong in drill, we kept standing up, we allowed ourselves to be corrected by the officers and ultimately perfected the routine. To stand up every day is to read the Word of God with discipline and diligence, taking it and applying it to our lives – in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Pause and reflect: Let’s not forget that we are in a war – a spiritual war. To get through it we need to start every day by standing up, standing firm, withstanding evil. If we can do that we will get to the finish line and our hope of eternal life. Ask God today for His Spirit to fill you, giving you the power to stand for Him!
