A Welcome, Not a Warning

Alan Jefferies

Feb 24th 2021 · Day 55

Start by reading...

Leviticus may not be most peoples ‘go to’ book in the Bible, yet among its text we find amazing spiritual truth. In it we discover some of my favourite passages.

These include Leviticus 16:2: ‘and the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.”’

The Day of Atonement was the one day in the year when the high priest went in to a special place that took him past a veil and into the presence of God to offer sacrifices for himself, his family and the nation. To go uninvited would mean certain death.

When Jesus became both our sacrifice and high priest, everything changed. Hebrews throws great light on the changes, and we can read of those in Hebrews 10. Jesus offered ‘a single sacrifice for sins’ (v. 12) and we need to enter the holy place by his blood, shed for us on the cross (vv. 19-20). Now there are no longer daily or annual sacrifices. We do not need a new high priest every year. We can enter in freely to the presence of God.

So, today we can confidently enter the presence of God (Hebrews 4:16). Unlike the Old Testament high priests, we enter with a welcome, not a warning. We can also enter anytime we like, rather than just once a year (Leviticus 16:34). What a waste, if today we don’t take that opportunity!

Pause and reflect: Consider what Jesus has done for you, and then confidently enter into the presence of God. A welcome, not a warning, awaits you!
