Start by reading...

Hebrews 11:6 tells us: ‘And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.’

This chapter is a great example of the pillars of our faith! It is filled with the stories of men and women who were faithful to God’s leading, many times not even living to see their works bear fruit (Hebrews 11:13).

We can read these verses and be amazed at the faith of these people and maybe even dream of how we would respond to God in similar situations. However, God has called us today to have faith, just as those in Hebrews 11. Their faith wasn’t limited to one particular instance or event, but it was woven through everything they did.

Faith is the entrance point to a relationship with God. He interacts with us based on His grace, His free, unearned favour, and we respond in faith. This passage boldly declares that without it, it is impossible to please God. The simple truth remains that if we want to come close to God, we must believe that He is, that He really exists; and that He will reward people who look for Him.

Faith is what pleases God. As we see from the Gospels, faith was important to Jesus. He looked for it and responded to it everywhere He went. So the underlying truth to draw from this is that God responds to faith. It pleases Him, it moves Him to act, and it is essential in the life of the believer.

Pause and reflect: If you are struggling with faith today, take that struggle to the One who is ‘the founder and perfecter of our faith’ (Hebrews 12:2). Did you see that? He started it, and he will perfect it!
