Imagine it. You are in a boat, you are a seasoned fisherman (or woman). There’s a storm brewing. You’re used to storms. But this is really bad…
You’ve got Jesus in the boat, so really, what are you worrying about? He’s the miracle-worker, right? But He’s asleep. Yes, asleep.
The story of the storm in Luke 8:22-25 is fascinating on several levels. Jesus doesn’t seem bothered by the storm. The disciples are scared they are going to die. They wake the sleeping Jesus, and He calmly sorts out the problem and asks, ‘Where is your faith?’ (v. 25). After that, they appear to be in awe of Him, asking questions about His identity – and yet, they had seen Him perform amazing miracles.
Although we may have seen Jesus do great things in our lives, and in the lives of others, when we hit a storm, it may seem to us that He is ‘asleep’. Where is He, when our world is rocked? When everything appears to be going wrong? Lord, are You really asleep? Or aren’t You bothered that I’m suffering?
We need to remember that storms will come. Sometimes they arrive with no warning, but of course, they are never a surprise to God. Jesus knows what will happen in our lives. He isn’t panicking about it! And because we can trust Him, our own fears should subside too.
Jesus calmed the storm with a rebuke – and then questioned the disciples regarding their faith.
I don’t know about you, but if I trusted Jesus more, relied on Him more, keeping my eyes on Him and not on the storm, I think I’d be way more peaceful. After all, if He’s in the storm with me, why should I be afraid?
Pause and reflect: Are you in a storm at the moment? Call out to Jesus. He loves you. Trust Him.
