Start by reading...
In Joshua 24 we have the very famous words spoken by Joshua: “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord’ (v15).
Joshua is asking the people who they will choose; who will they serve? The Israelites were stubborn, constantly turning their back on God, always looking back to their time in Egypt. Joshua was challenging them, if they did not choose to follow God, they would end up following something else or some other god.
Our lives are full of choices; every day is a new day and we can decide to lean into God and serve Him with our time, money and effort, or we can choose the things of this world, which will lead to us serving money, careers, addictions etc. If we are not moving towards God, we are moving away from Him.
Joshua then declares to the people that regardless of what they chose, he and his family would serve the Lord. The verse is not just great for cards or pictures that we put up in our homes – Joshua sets an example to the whole of Israel: ‘Regardless of what you decide, I will serve the Lord.’
Whether at home or work, we must choose to serve the Lord and set an example not just for our children (if we have them) to follow, but everyone we meet. We should not be influenced by the things of this world, but we must show others in what we say and do that our hope is eternal.
Pause and reflect: Take the opportunity today to check what you are viewing; what you are listening to; what you are spending your time doing. Are you putting the Lord first and serving only Him?
