Apr 8th 2021 · Day 98
Start by reading...
As I read the texts for today I was struck by a particular thought – God wants 100 per cent of our devotion. Perhaps 95 per cent is good, but it is not enough, because God wants our hearts in their entirety.
As you read through Judges, you see over and again that God was with the Israelites when they honoured Him and lived according to His commands. When they forgot the ways of the Lord, God’s anger ‘was kindled against Israel’ (Judges 2:14,20; 3:8). So, how do we ensure that our hearts are fully committed to our God?
Psalm 16 gives us some sound advice. It is easy to put our confidence in our finances, in people, or systems; however, the psalmist says that it is God alone in whom we should take refuge. The psalmist says in verse 4, ‘The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply’ but ‘The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot … I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken’ (vv5,8). What incredible advice. Many people around the world have been shaken by the devastation of the coronavirus, the racial unrest, political acrimony, unstable economies – and the list continues. But our hope is in our God and we need to keep our focus on Him.
In Luke 20:46 Jesus warns us not to be like the scribes, the religious leaders of His day, who loved to be greeted publicly, had the best seats and honour and so on. Their internal lives never matched up to their public showmanship.
May we be totally yielded to our God. Let the way we live today show our 100 per cent love and devotion to our God.
Pause and reflect: Psalm 16:1: ‘Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.’ Place yourself in His hands today because it is the safest place for you to be. Serve Him with wholehearted devotion.
