Calling Out

Sheila Jacobs

Apr 13th 2021 · Day 103

Start by reading...

In the New Testament reading today, we come to the trial, crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus. It was the time when the disciples watched all their hopes disappear as the man they had trusted and followed was tortured to death in surely the cruellest form of execution known to humanity.

Of course, today we view the crucifixion from ‘the other side of the cross’. We know that Jesus rose from the dead, having paid the price for our sin; He appeared to His followers, ascended back into heaven and then the Holy Spirit came, to equip and empower.

They didn’t know that all this would happen, during the events we read of in Luke 23. And yet, there is faith, even in the most unexpected place. On a cross, next to Jesus. A convicted criminal asks Jesus to remember him (v42) and is promised a place in Paradise (v43). The criminal could do nothing to save himself; he couldn’t boast of his good works. All he could do was cry out to the One who could save him; cry out for mercy and forgiveness. And Jesus didn’t turn him away. He never does, when we honestly call out to Him.

Life’s trials and unexpected twists and turns can often ‘knock us off course’, even in our faith. Disappointments happen. Discouragements and difficult times may make us doubt everything. But even when we’re at the end of ourselves, we have the option to cry out to the One who knows us best, who loves us, who understands – and who can save us.

We don’t have to have qualifications or great deeds to enter the kingdom. All we need is to turn to Jesus – the One who died so we can have eternal life.

Pause and reflect: Have you called out to Jesus to save you? Do you need to call out to Him today? Come just as you are. Be real. Be honest.
