Start by reading...
Psalm 37:4: ‘Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.’
I was at primary school in the 1980s, before the technological boom. One moment I always loved was giving or receiving birthday party invitations. Back then, there weren’t Facebook events, it was good old pen and paper and it was always exciting to be invited to attend another friend’s party or to invite friends to my party. I would run home with the colourful invites and pass them to my mum, declaring, ‘Mum, am I allowed to go?’ More often than not, I was allowed!
Every day, God has kingdom invitations for us to enjoy. These invitations are not forced upon us, we must choose to go. We often only discover these invites as we spend time enjoying God.
Psalm 37 is full of kingdom invitations. Perhaps the most prominent is this invitation to delight in the Lord, but what does that mean and what does it involve?
Delighting is directly linked in this passage to receiving. It seems that our receiving from Him is conditional upon us delighting in Him. It is as we delight in Him and discover more of the character and nature of God that we truly know Him and glean insight into our own hearts. His desires and longings become ours!
Delighting is outworked in our being with God. To be present with God is to be absent from distraction and confusion. Looking longingly on Jesus, delving creatively into His Word, holding hard to His truth leads us towards Him.
Pause and reflect: Why not shut off any distraction, and spend a moment gazing on His beauty?
